Houston Wine Geeks at Oporto Cafe and Wine Bar

May 14, 2008

oporto.jpgScared of WineSpeak?

Embarrassed when you have to read and order from a wine list? Want to know more about wine and how to enjoy it?

Houston Wine Geeks is an informal group of wine enthusiasts focused on the ins-and-outs of wine appreciation and wine education.

This meeting is after the big International Sommeliers Guild test on Monday May 12. Hopefully, we’ll be celebrating! Come prepared to live and talk wine!

John is moving forward to take the Certified Specialist of Wine Exam (CSW) in New Orleans on May 31, so he’s not done trying to learn everything about wine. This meeting will be all about Portuguese wine including Port.

Interested? Sign up and RSVP for our next meeting. Come every week or come when you can!

FYI: We use www.meetup.com as our RSVP/Membership tracking tool. It’s free for you!

If you’re looking for a swanky wine bar that’ll impress a date, Oporto is your place. The tapas here aren’t snacks; they’re huge. There’s nothing better to nibble on while quaffing a glass of wine than the “Oportobello.” It’s a marinated portobello mushroom topped with spinach and artichoke gratin and finished with white truffle oil. If you’re still hungry after that Texas-size “tapa,” go for the linguiça oporto com batatas, a Portuguese-style sausage sautéed with onion, roasted peppers, potatoes, garlic, port wine and piri-piri oil. Great wines and delicious tapas will surely impress your date, … Saúde

    About Blue Nile Restaurant

Blue Nile is a family owned restaurant and has been open since 1994. We have been nominated as one of the best ethnic restaurant among the Houston community. Food lovers will enjoy the unique taste of Ethiopian dishes in a warm and friendly environment.

We serve our traditional dishes with Injera bread that is 100% made of teff. Injera is a soft spongy pancake-like bread made out of teff flour. It is traditionally served in Ethiopia where a variety of stews, meat dishes and salads, are placed upon the injera.

Teff, an Ethiopian Staple, is the smallest grain in the world, yet it contains giant nutrition. It’s high in protein, iron and minerals with a calcium content more than 17 times that of wheat or barley.

“Feast is about bringing a traditional and relaxed European approach to dining to Downtown Houston. We will be offering simple, rustic cuisine in a relaxed, homely environment. Our emphasis will be on quality, local, seasonal ingredients prepared with passion and imagination.

Feast is informal, lively and different, serving great food and wine at prices reasonable enough to become a neighborhood “local” as well as a destination for a night out. We serve the traditional rustic cuisine of the continent on a rolling, ever changing menu which will evolve season by season. We feature organic meats, fresh fish and great vegetarian food. We offer familiar favorites alongside the more adventurous fare for which we have become known and will often feature dishes specifically designed to be shared.

“Our desire is to summon the spirit of a family meal shared around the kitchen table of an old-fashioned European family farm.”

    Dinner entrees from $15-22.
